His murals at the Boston Public Library, which he apparently viewed as his masterwork, strike me as kitsch of the highest order.

I love some of John Singer Sargent’s paintings - and especially ‘Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose’. Have to admit that - other than his connections to the British establishment - I don’t know a huge amount about his life though. Is it worth reading about? Any good JSS bios you’d recommend?
